Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. DuVernay instantly fell in love after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an instrument for social activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through artwork. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a student. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the garbage from one of the juries. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
